More than a dozen volunteers showed up to the East Windsor Middle School for our third clean up event held on July 11th 2009. Volunteers cleaned up the fields and forest surrounding the school grounds. Many were amazed to discover auto parts from a car well over 50 years old! A big congratulations to the volunteers and their hard work. Make sure to check out photos from our third event here.

There will be a Clean up Event on July 11, 2009 at 10 am. The event will be held at  the East Windsor Middle School. Check back for more details as they become available.

April 16, 2009- Lee Currey and I gave a presentation to the Board of Education in regards to the Keep it Green Project. It was great to meet with several school administrators including Superintendent Howes and Board members to discuss what a great idea this project is. The project has been very well received and it was agreed that this is a perfect fit for the East Windsor school system for several reason. First being that the school system requires students to fulfil service hour requirements. Secondly, this project demonstrates the school’s system interest to be leaders in the green movement. Tentative plans are being made for a June clean up event, check back often for details as they become available.

Once again we appreciate all the support we have received from the community.

Check out this week’s edition of The Reminder for a great cover story on the  Keep It Green project. Reporter Jen Coe wrote a great piece about our first event on Saturday, March 28th.

The rain held out for us and each event turns out more citizens who support the project. In the next weeks, we will be planning other events to hold in the warmer months. Saturday was our first clean up event and I must say that it exceeded my expectations. First off, the community support was a fantastic thing to witness. It was great to see volunteers smiling and enjoying themselves as we hauled a staggering amount of trash out of the forest. The event was also an eye-opener  to most participants because of the hazardous materials removed. People were shocked to see gas cans, chemicals, and other environmentally harmful materials carelessly left in the woods. Needless to say all harmful material were appropriately removed from the site and the clean up was a success.

Volunteers from kids to parents worked for approximately 2 hours hauling trash and filling an entire 30 foot dumpster. Most were surprised how quickly we were able to fill it.

Tomorrow is our first event and this week has been pretty crazy making sure that this event could happen. I wanted to express my gratitude to the town of East Windsor, first selectman Denise Menard and Staff, Superintendent Howes and Lee Currey and Michael Mosher as well as George Roberts from USA hauling and Recycling. All very instrumental in making sure this first event gets to happen. Thanks!

I hope these events will be a success as well as a learning experience on how we can make each event better.

The T-Shirts arrived this week in time for our first clean up events, and I must say they are pretty nice (Younger brother Kevin strikes a pose) I’m really happy they came out so well.

I was excited this morning to see our first announcement running in the Hartford Courant. I know, print media is shrinking all around us but it’s just one more way for the Keep it Green campaign to reach our surrounding community. I have already received several emails today in support of the project, a big deal to me.

I am very impressed with the Hartford Courant  iTowns sectional. I found it easy to list our event and get the word out. When newspapers are closing all around us (Rocky Mountain Times a great video to watch), it’s nice to see a newspaper that can adapt with the times.

Today I was contacted by George Roberts of USA Hauling and Recycling letting me know that they are behind the Keep it Green Project 100%. This is a big relief for me because I was still unsure of how we would be getting rid of the garbage we will be collecting. I am very excited to work with a company that is very in-tuned to the community they serve.
